NO GHANIAN FOOTBALLER MADE IT TO THE TOP 30 CAF 2022 PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARDS

A 30-person shortlist for the 2022 CAF Player of the Year award has been announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

It’s interesting that no Ghanaian player received a nomination for the esteemed prize; Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane were at the top of the shortlist.

The Black Stars’ abysmal performance at the 2021 AFCON in January could be to blame for the absence of Ghanaian footballers from the nomination list.

Ghana placed last in a group that also included Morocco, Gabon, and Comoros at the Cameroon tournament after failing to win a single game.

Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City and Algeria, Bertrand Traore of Aston Villa and Burkina Faso, and Naby Keita of Liverpool and Guinea are among those who have been nominated.

One of most nominations come from Senegal, where five of the AFCON champions are well-represented.

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon each have three nominations. Morocco is next with four nominations.

In the meantime, Kamaldeen Sulemana, a young player from Ghana, has been nominated for the CAF Young Player of the Year award.

After transferring from Nordsjaelland to Rennes last summer, Kamaldeen established himself as the most expensive adolescent footballer from Ghana and the second-most expensive from Africa.

The winger, who turned 20 in February, dominated Ligue 1 and established himself as one of the division’s most thrilling players.

Despite a back injury that interrupted his season early in March, he still managed to score five goals and provide two assists across all competitions.
