We Are Not Creating New Constituencies – Bossman Asare
The Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Eric Asare Bossman, has urged the public to disregard reports that the Commission is new constituencies before the 2020 general elections.
According to reports, the EC is planning to create new constituencies, to favor the New Patriotic Party’s stronghold in the Ashanti region and the remaining spread across 12 other regions in which Bossman Asare stated that such reports is false and untrue.
But Dr Bossman maintains: “So far the Commission has not talked about creating new constituencies and from where I seat, I don’t think new constituencies are going to be created for this 2020 elections”.
Article 47(5) of the 1992 Constitution mandates the EC to “review the division of Ghana into constituencies at intervals of not less than seven years, or within 12 months after the publication of the enumeration figures after holding of a census of the population of Ghana, whichever is earlier, as may, as a result, alter constituencies”.
But Bossman Asare said the Commission has not had any discussions on the creation of new constituencies.
She stressed the need for any such actions to be considered carefully because certain constituencies have large numbers, others have small numbers.
