The President of Ntotroso Traditional Council in Ahafo Region, Barimah Twireko Ampem (II), has urged all traditional leaders to use the celebration of festivals to attain developmental projects to boost the living conditions of the people.
Barimah Twireko Ampem (II) said this at the launch of this year(2020) annual Apomasu Yam Festival for the chiefs and people of Ntotroso in Ahafo Region themed, ” Mobilizing The People And Resources For Development: The Role Of Traditional Authority ” which begins on 2nd February to 1st March 2020 with several activities.
He stated that traditional leaders must put proper measures in place to use festivals to solicit for developing from the government, corporate organizations and individuals because the celebration of the festival is one of the best avenues to let the world know the challenges the communities confront.
According to him, the marking of festivals attract all kinds of people especially government officials who are mandated to ensure that people enjoy development so the chiefs must be bold to forward the problems to those developmental managers via their speeches and also do follow -up on them.
He mentioned chiefs must desist from making merry out of the festivals they celebrate but rather channel the funds generated from the celebration to raise developmental projects seen by the people as legacy to better the living conditions of the people. ” It’s good to make merry but development must be key ” Barimah Twireko Ampem (II), Traditional Leader of Ahafo Ntotroso stated.
Barimah Twireko Ampem (II) disclosed that the chiefs of Ahafo Ntotroso are able to use the APOMASU YAM Festival which is celebrated every two years to attain a nursing college and a 58 seater bus to assist the nursing students and their lecturers visit places of interest in relation with their courses.
He revealed if not of the marking of the festival like it would be extremely difficult to get the nursing college and school bus provided respectively by Newmont/NADeF and late Former Ghana’s Vice President, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur.
Mr. Joseph Danso who represented Newmont Goldcrop Ghana promised that the mining firm which has been assisting the chiefs and the people of Ahafo Ntotroso to celebrate the festival since 2006 will continue to play its role to make this year’s celebration the best and also to achieve its main objectives being development.
The Asutifi North District Chief Executive, Mr. Anthony Mensah, on behalf of the assembly stated that the festival over the years has brought absolute unity and development to the people of Ntotroso and the district at large.
He said the assembly is ever ready to support the marking of the Yam Festival as planned.
He pleaded with the chiefs to play a vital role to ensure that the district enjoys the maximum peace as the country gears – up for general elections on 7th December 2020.
The Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr. Evans Opoku Bobie, mentioned the Regional Coordinating Council(RCC) will always partner with the chiefs and the people of all communities where festivals are celebrated in the region because there are countless benefits the region and Ghana as a whole can derive from.
He assured the chiefs and the people of Ntotroso of nicely drafting the history behind the APOMASU YAM festival and putting it online for the world which will attract all kinds of people.
Nana Osei Kofi Abiri, the Traditional Leader of Kenyasi No.1, commended his colleague (Barimah Ampem) for using the festival to get developmental projects for his community which has been of importance to the region and the country at large.
He said per the measures put in place he believes this year’s celebration will be better than the previous one.
The launch was graced by Heads of Departments, Clergy, Security Services, Executives of Newmont Ahafo Development Foundation( NADeF), Managers of Ntotroso College of Nursing, Traditional Leaders among others.
