GHANA’S POULTRY INDUSTRY ON VERGE OF COLLAPSE OVER MAIZE S …

Poultry farm owners in the country have described the current state of the industry as a “life and death situation” warning that the likelihood they may soon be thrown out of business is high

This, they say has come about as a result of the acute shortage of maize which is currently rocking the country, at a time the government has boasted of huge investments into the food sector through its flagship Planting for Food and JOBS Programme.

The farmers say they have had to spend huge sums of money to keep their birds alive as scarce maize prices soar; they have asked the government to permit individual farmers and private entities to import maize into the country or the whole poultry industry be brought to its knees.

Speaking with the media, President of the Ghana Poultry Farmers Association in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region, Mr. Dei Kusi said “we are having sleepless nights due to the scarcity of maize; we are practically sacrificing our lives to keep our birds alive”.

“We saw it coming, due to the poor yield of maize last year and warned the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to do something about it but all those fell on deaf ears. We are now compelled to sell off our birds because there is no food to be given to them.
