At this year’s Grammy Awards, Beninese singer Angélique Kidjo and South African DJ Black Coffee both took home awards.
Kidjo’s Mother Nature album took home the award for best world music album of the year. Nigerian musicians Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, and Mr. Eazi performed.
The 61-year-old artist won the award over Nigerians Wizkid, Femi Kuti, and Ghanaian Rocky Dawuni.
After winning the category in 2014, 2015, and 2019, this was her fourth Grammy win.
She paid respect to Africa’s rising generation of artists in her acceptance speech, saying they would “take the globe by storm.”
Black Coffee from South Africa took up the award for best dance/electronic music album. He received the award for his album Subconsciously.
It was his very first time winning a Grammy award.
