Gov’t To Create 2000 Jobs For Kayayei

The Minister for Business Development, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal has hinted his outfit is planning to train 2000 female head porters, popularly known as Kayayei, in which they will be given jobs after efficient training.

The move, according to the Minister of Business Development, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, is to build their capacity and give them an alternative source of livelihood.

‘The focus of Government is to reduce the disparities between the rural and urban areas,  however all these measures will take time, that is why we welcome your intervention of providing accommodation and a training centers and creating 2000 jobs for Kayayei whilst we roll out more measures to reduce the Kayayei phenomenon’, Mohammed Awal exclusively told  Kwame Tutu on Anopa Nkomo on Accra based Kingdom FM 107.7

The government has decided to absorb a large number of unemployed youth through direct government intervention and partnerships with the private sector and numerous jobs had been created.

The Government of Ghana, through a public-private partnership, built a hostel facility for itinerant female load carriers (Kayayei) in the Ashanti Region.

The 2,000-capacity hostel facility at Sepe-Buokrom has a Creche and a Reform and Skill Training Centre.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, pledged during the 2016 elections to provide hostel facilities for Kayayei who sleep on the streets at the mercy of the weather.
