Former Sports Minister under the erstwhile John Agyekum Kuffour administration,Mallam Issah, has called on the Akufo-Addo government to apologise to Ghanaians for making a u-turn on its position on the state contracting loans to finance projects.
In opposition, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) criticised the Mahama administration for taking loans to develop the country and promised to do things differently when elected.
Mallam Issah said the NPP previously accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of engaging in massive borrowings but are currently doing worse.
But that promise has not been kept by the NPP. In its first 3 years, the Akufo-Addo government borrowed nearly eight billion dollars. That is approximately 40 billion Ghana Cedis.
“Somebody should tell me what they have used the loans they have borrowed for. I cannot see any corresponding projects to the loans they have contracted and so we need to ask them questions,” he said.
“Dr Bamuwia and President Akufo-Addo told us when they were in opposition that Mahama was borrowing too much and that we had a lot of money and resources in Ghana. Lo and behold, Ghanaians voted for the NPP only for them to come and borrow more than what Mahama did.
According to him, the government must show evidence of what it used the borrowed money for.
President Nana Akufo-Addo and his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia while in opposition criticized the Mahama government over what they called excessive borrowing.
